    Cirrus Optimus

    Cirrus Optimus

A whole new generation of sound level meters under the brand name ‘optimus, featuring smart design and advanced technology, was announced by Cirrus Research.

The research Cirrus undertook at the beginning of this project was clear: Noise measurement and health & safety professionals were looking for sound measurement equipment which is easy to use, flexible and upgradeable. The new optimus range is said to meet those requirements

It takes just three button presses to make a noise measurement using the new optimus meter: ‘On’, ‘Calibrate’ and ‘Start’. The instrument then takes all the necessary measurements simultaneously before displaying the results on a colour OLED display. New software allows voice tags to be recorded for future reference. As for on-going flexibility, optimus users will be able to upgrade their instrument, at any time in the future, should needs change.

To ensure that the measurements made with an optimus sound level meter can be validated, all of the optimus instruments feature the LifeTime archive. This automatically stores the most important parameters into a protected and secure section of memory which can only be accessed and downloaded using a special software program.

The first models in the optimus range – ‘optimus red’ sound level meters which are aimed specifically at the occupational and noise at work markets – were unveiled at the A+A Health and Safety exhibition in Dusseldorf, Germany,  in November. With ergonomically designed cases, the range offers a choice of Class 1 and Class 2 accuracy, with optional data logging and real-time octave bands.

Further colour coded optimus ranges are set to follow, from basic sound level meters, to those aimed at the Environmental noise market, as well as specialist, multi-use instruments.

    New Thermal Converters Announced

    November 6, 2009 by admin

Precision Measurements has just introduced the EL-1000 series of thermal converters manufactured with the company’s most advanced high-accuracy vacuum thermocouple. The design substantially reduces the AC/DC transfer errors. The series EL-1000 thermal converters are designed for measuring AC current and voltages up to 1mhz.

Due to increased demand for high-accuracy AC voltage and current measurements at high frequencies, the EL-1000 series uses single junction vacuum thermocouples. These thermocouples utilize Evanohm heater wire and a cold bead which eliminates the Peltier and Seebeck effects, thereby resulting in a highly accurate AC/DC transfer device.

The versatility of the new design allows the use of platinum leads which, through Precision Measurements testing, have proven to lower even further the AC/DC transfer errors and extend the use of thermal converters above the 100 MHz threshold.

A technical paper presented at the 2003 CPEN conference discussed the new design in detail and notes several advantages such as lower noise susceptibility (copies available upon request).

Precision Measurements considers the new converter design a major contribution to the measurements world because of its high frequency current and voltage calibration that provides accuracies which have previously unachievable with traditional converters.

    Turbine Meter Provides Leak Detection

    November 6, 2009 by admin
Filed under Meters & Testers, Sensing

Flow Technology today announced the FT-LD (Leakage Detection) turbine flow meter system. This advanced solution offers significant improvements in flow measurement accuracy under dynamic temperature conditions. The FT-LD system provides inferred mass measurements for leakage detection by correcting for temperature effects on fluid volume.

Today’s industrial companies must ensure the ruggedness and reliability of every component used in their products. For example, manufacturers of off-road equipment employ automated test stands to test torque converters for leakage prior to assembly in tractors, bulldozer, backhoes, etc. Transmission oil is measured before entering the torque converter and again after exiting. Any difference in the flow rate can be attributed to leakage in the device. This testing is complicated by the fact that fluid volume at cool temperature is not the same as at high temperatures.

The FT-LD Turbine Meter Leak Dectector

The FT-LD Turbine Meter Leak Dectector

Employing Flow Technology’s FT Series turbine flowmeter paired with the LinearLink(TM) Temperature Compensated Interface (TCI), the FT-LD system helps users obtain precise leakage measurements for fluids such as engine oil, transmission oil and hydraulic fluid. The FT Series meter is an ideal choice when high accuracy, compact size and fast response are critical. The LinearLink TCI is a sophisticated electronics platform for flow meter linearization, viscosity correction and density compensation.

For leakage measurement, FT Series turbine flow meters are installed in series on a test stand fixture with the inlet meter located downstream of the device-under-test (DUT) and the outlet meter positioned upstream of the device. The system is then pressurized with the application fluid and the DUT is run through pre-programmed tests to evaluate its overall performance.

The LinearLink TCI infers mass by density compensation, essentially bringing the cold and hot fluid volumes to a standard. Regardless of the fluid temperature, the compensated volume of flow is converted to a weight equivalent-allowing the user to determine the amount of leakage that has occurred during a test procedure. Fluid leakage rates are calculated by subtracting the outlet mass flow rate from the inlet mass flow rate.

SICK today announced the launch of its CLV650 bar code scanners with autofocus technology and the CLV640 bar code scanners with dynamic focus. These new bar code scanners augment SICK’s CLV600 family of flexible and easy-to-use 1D bar code scanners.

    CLV 450 & CLV 650 Code Scanners

    CLV 450 & CLV 650 Code Scanners

With a simple setup process, exceptional reading performance and flexible data handling capabilities, these scanners are ideal for high-performance bar code reading applications in the material handling and logistics markets.

The CLV650 and CLV640 are compact bar code scanners that use proprietary SMART (SICK’s Modular Advanced Recognition Technology) code reconstruction algorithms and high-performance microprocessors, enabling them to read damaged and dirty bar codes. The CLV650’s autofocus feature, distance measurement technology, and expertly engineered optics give it a competitive advantage in applications where space is limited and large depth of field is required. In addition, the CLV640 is a cost-effective option for reading high density codes and for providing increased depth of field in applications requiring an external input to change the focus position.

These bar code scanners feature data handling capabilities to execute a wide variety of user-configurable logic, output data filtering, and sorting functions. Plus, SICK’s easy-to-use SOPAS software helps reduce programming and processing requirements of the host system. An embedded web page can also be configured to provide statistical performance and diagnostic data to remote locations over the Internet using standard browser software.
